About
James McCallion (September 27, 1918 – July 11, 1991) was a character actor born in Derry, Ireland, who immigrated to the United States as a child. His career encompassed film, television, radio, and theater across more than five decades.
McCallion began acting at the age of seven and made his Broadway debut at nine, appearing in Yours Truly in 1927 alongside Leon Errol. His Broadway work continued through 1948 and included productions such as Kathleen, Sea Dogs, Roosty, But for the Grace of God, and Lysistrata. A 1937 Daily World article featured McCallion and fellow young actor Robert Mayors in connection with one of his stage productions, describing the play as an outstanding contribution to the theatrical season.
His stage and radio work, including appearances on the program Billy and Betty, drew the attention of Hollywood studios. Among his early film credits were Boy Slaves, Code of the Streets, and Pride of the Blue Grass, all released in 1939.
McCallion's television career extended from the 1950s through the early 1980s, encompassing more than one hundred programs. One of his most prominent television roles was Mi Taylor in the NBC series National Velvet, which aired from 1960 to 1962. The character had originally been portrayed by Mickey Rooney in the 1944 film of the same name.
In 1943, McCallion married actress Nora Marlowe. The marriage lasted until Marlowe's death in 1977. They had two children: a son, Denis McCallion, who became a television producer, and a daughter, Tracey McCallion Campbell, who worked as a personal assistant in the entertainment industry.
McCallion died on July 11, 1991, at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, California. His daughter Tracey stated that he had suffered a heart attack following treatment for kidney failure. He was 72 years old.
