About

James Mason was an English actor born on 15 May 1909 in Huddersfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the youngest of three sons of John Mason and Mabel Hattersley. His father, a wealthy wool merchant, traveled frequently to France and Belgium on business, while his mother, who had studied and worked as an artist in London before returning to Yorkshire, raised her sons with care. Mason was educated at Marlborough College and earned a first in architecture at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where his involvement with stock theatre companies first drew him toward acting. He received no formal acting training.

His stage career began in Aldershot in 1931 with The Rascal, after which he joined the Old Vic in London under Tyrone Guthrie, appearing in productions including The Cherry Orchard, Henry VIII, Measure for Measure, The Importance of Being Earnest, Love for Love, The Tempest, Twelfth Night, and Macbeth, alongside Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester. In the mid-1930s he performed at the Gate Theatre in Dublin, notably in Pride and Prejudice with Betty Chancellor. He returned to the stage in 1941 and 1942 to appear in Jupiter Laughs by A. J. Cronin.

Mason's film career began in earnest with a series of British quota quickies from 1935 onward, starting with Late Extra. He built toward leading man status through the Gainsborough melodramas of the 1940s, beginning with The Man in Grey in 1943, which made him a top-level star alongside Margaret Lockwood, Stewart Granger, and Phyllis Calvert. He appeared in two further Gainsborough productions with Lockwood, A Place of One's Own and The Wicked Lady, as well as the psychodrama The Seventh Veil in 1945, in which he played the tyrannical guardian of a pianist. Exhibitors voted him the most popular star in Britain each year from 1944 to 1947 and the most popular international star in 1946. His performance as a mortally wounded IRA bank robber in Carol Reed's Odd Man Out in 1947 earned him his strongest reviews to that point; the film was the first recipient of the BAFTA Award for Best British Film.

Mason's Broadway career spanned from 1947 to 1979. Among his stage credits were Bathsheba and Faith Healer. The Broadway production of Bathsheba, which Mason undertook with his wife, was not a commercial success.

Moving to Hollywood, Mason appeared in films directed by Max Ophüls, including Caught and The Reckless Moment, before his American career gained significant momentum with The Desert Fox in 1951, in which he played General Rommel for director Henry Hathaway. He subsequently signed a seven-year contract with 20th Century Fox. His Hollywood output grew to include George Cukor's A Star Is Born in 1954, for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest in 1959, Stanley Kubrick's Lolita in 1962, Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait in 1978, and Sidney Lumet's The Verdict in 1982. Additional notable films across his career included Julius Caesar in 1953, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in 1954, Bigger Than Life in 1956, Journey to the Center of the Earth in 1959, Georgy Girl in 1966, Spring and Port Wine in 1970, and The Boys from Brazil in 1978. Over the course of his career he received three Academy Award nominations, three Golden Globe nominations, and two BAFTA Award nominations.

Mason died on 27 July 1984. Following his death, his ashes were interred near the tomb of his friend and fellow English actor Charlie Chaplin.
