About

James Anthony Luisi (November 2, 1928 – June 7, 2002) was an American actor and former professional basketball player born in East Harlem, New York City. He pursued an unusually varied career that took him from the basketball court to the Broadway stage and ultimately to a long and prolific career in film and television.

Luisi attended St. Francis College on a basketball scholarship and was selected by the Boston Celtics in the sixth round of the 1951 NBA Draft. Following military service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he joined the Baltimore Bullets for the 1953–54 season. Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds, he played guard in 31 games and averaged 3 points per game. After his professional basketball career concluded, he enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to pursue acting.

His Broadway career spanned from 1955 to 1988 and included productions of Alfie!, Do I Hear a Waltz?, the original 1966 production of Sweet Charity, Zorba, and Can-Can, among others. These stage credits established him as a working presence in New York theater across more than three decades.

Luisi built an extensive television résumé beginning in 1961, appearing on series including Naked City, The Rifleman, Bonanza, Adam-12, Kojak, Mannix, Ironside, Gunsmoke, and The Streets of San Francisco, among many others. In 1976 he shared a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Special for his portrayal of George Washington in the 1975 miniseries First Ladies Diaries: Martha Washington. That same year he guest-starred on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and made his first appearance on The Rockford Files as a shady businessman in a Season 2 episode. Beginning in Season 3, he took on the recurring role of Lt. Doug Chapman, a high-ranking police officer antagonistic toward detective Jim Rockford, played by James Garner. Luisi portrayed Chapman in 23 episodes across Seasons 3 through 6 and reprised the role in two Rockford television movies in 1996.

During the 1980s he continued to appear regularly on television, with recurring roles including Ben Clark in 23 episodes of the soap opera Santa Barbara in 1987 and 1988, and Duke Earl Johnson in 21 episodes of Days of Our Lives from 1987 to 1992. He also guest-starred on series such as Hart to Hart, The A-Team, Knight Rider, Magnum P.I., Simon & Simon, and Knots Landing, where he played the same role across four episodes.

His film work included both theatrical releases and television movies. Studio films included Ben (1972), Norma Rae (1979), Star 80 (1983), Murphy's Law (1986), and The Hidden (1987), among others. His television movie credits included Contract on Cherry Street (1977), One in a Million: The Ron LeFlore Story (1978), and The Red-Light Sting (1984), among numerous additional productions.

Luisi died of cancer on June 7, 2002, at the age of 73, and is buried at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park in Los Angeles. He was survived by his wife of 41 years, the former Georgia Phillips; his daughter, Jamie Swartz; his brother, Jerry Luisi; and two grandchildren.
