About

James J. Morton (December 25, 1861 – April 10, 1938) was an American vaudeville comedian, monologist, and master of ceremonies born in Boston, Massachusetts. He began performing in vaudeville during the 1890s alongside his wife, Maude Revel, as a double act. A physically large man, Morton was billed as "the Boy Comic," performing as though he were an overgrown child eager to win over the audience. The act centered on his attempts to direct his wife while she sang, offering explanations of her songs to the audience, though he never succeeded in completing his interruptions.

In the early 1900s Morton transitioned to solo performance, refining his stage persona as a monologist whose humor moved freely between absurdities. Vaudeville historian Anthony Slide described his approach as singing songs without music or rhyme and delivering jokes that were deliberately pointless. As an encore, Morton would return to the stage claiming he had omitted lines from a previous song, then perform lyrics that carried no coherent meaning. He also developed a habit of introducing other acts on the bill before they appeared, frequently doing so from the side of the stage and describing them in terms entirely unrelated to what those acts actually performed.

This unconventional approach to introducing performers led to a significant distinction: in 1906, at the American Theater in New York, Morton became the first recognized master of ceremonies in vaudeville. That same year he was named the first secretary of the Vaudeville Comedy Club, an association of performers founded by Will Cressy. Also in 1906, Morton took issue with the rising success of another performer, James C. Morton, born James C. Lankton, whose use of a similar name Morton viewed as an appropriation. He placed advertisements in the trade press to register his objection and to distinguish himself from his rival.

Morton extended his career to Broadway between 1908 and 1911, appearing in the musical Merry-Go-Round and the revue Hello, Paris. He died on April 10, 1938, at a retirement home for actors in Islip, New York, at the age of 76.
