About

Henry James Hayter, born on 23 April 1907 in Lonavala, India, was a British actor who worked across stage, film, and television until his death on 27 March 1983 in Spain. Raised in Scotland, he attended Dollar Academy before training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His stage career began in London with a West End debut in the 1936 comedy The Composite Man at Daly's Theatre, and he later brought his talents to Broadway, where he appeared in 1951 in Romeo and Juliet.

Hayter's film career also began in 1936 with Sensation, though his work in that medium was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Royal Armoured Corps. Following the war, he resumed his career and became widely recognized for two roles released in 1952: Friar Tuck in The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men and Samuel Pickwick in The Pickwick Papers. His performance as Pickwick earned him a BAFTA Award for Best British Actor nomination. He returned to the role of Friar Tuck in the 1967 film A Challenge for Robin Hood. His physical presence and distinctive voice contributed to his casting in such character-driven parts.

Among his other notable film appearances, Hayter played the Ministry doorman in Passport to Pimlico in 1949 and took the role of Mr. Jessop, a bookshop owner, in the 1968 musical film Oliver!, appearing in scenes involving the Artful Dodger and Oliver's subsequent court appearance.

On television, Hayter's 1946 BBC series Pinwright's Progress holds a recognized place in broadcasting history as the first example of the half-hour situation comedy format in British television. His later television work included roles in The Forsyte Saga in 1967, The Onedin Line, and an appearance in the 1967 Avengers episode A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Station, in which he played a ticket collector. He also portrayed Dickson McCunn in the BBC serial Huntingtower, adapted from the novel by John Buchan. In 1978, Hayter joined the cast of the long-running BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? as senior salesman Mr. Tebbs, though his tenure on the series ended when the company behind Mr. Kipling cake advertisements, for which he served as the original narrator, paid him a bonus to withdraw from the show. Hayter had eight children and was 75 years old at the time of his death.
