About
James H. Stoddart was a British-born stage actor who built a distinguished career on the American stage spanning more than five decades. Born James Henry Stoddart on October 13, 1827, in Yorkshire, England, he came from a theatrical family; his father was an actor at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow. Stoddart began performing at a young age in Britain before emigrating to the United States.
Stoddart arrived in New York in 1854, making his American debut at Wallack's Theatre in a minor role in A Phenomenon in a Smock Frock. After two seasons with that company, he joined Laura Keene's troupe before eventually returning to Wallack's. The most sustained chapter of his career came through his association with A. M. Palmer's Union Square Theater stock company, where he remained connected for twenty years. Working primarily as a stock player throughout much of his professional life, he developed a broad range of experience across the repertory system.
His Broadway appearances, which span the years 1860 to 1901, included productions of Oliver Twist, A Pair of Spectacles, Men and Acres, and The Only Way. Late in his career, Stoddart achieved individual stardom when he took on the role of Lachlan Campbell in the 1901 production of The Bonnie Brier Bush, a popular play that brought him prominent recognition beyond the ensemble work that had defined much of his stage life.
In 1855, Stoddart married actress Matilda Phillips. He published his autobiography, The Recollections of a Player, in 1902. Illness prompted his retirement from the stage in 1905. Stoddart died on December 9, 1907, at his home in Sewaren, New Jersey, at the age of eighty.
