About
James David Grout (22 October 1927 – 24 June 2012) was an English actor born in Edmonton, London, the son of Beatrice Anne and William Grout. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and built a career spanning stage, television, and radio over several decades.
Grout made his Broadway debut in 1965 in Half a Sixpence, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical that same year. The production represented his sole Broadway credit and established his presence on the international stage.
On British television, Grout accumulated an extensive list of character roles across more than four decades. He portrayed Chief Inspector Prescott in a 1970 episode of Dixon of Dock Green, Dai Owen in Looking for Clancy (1975), and Jonas Bradlaw in Murder Most English (1977). Further credits included Div. Supt. Albert Hallam in Juliet Bravo (1981), Mr. McAllister in The Beiderbecke Affair (1984), the Inspector in The Box of Delights (1984), and Professor George Bunn in A Very Peculiar Practice (1988). He appeared as Granville Bennett in All Creatures Great and Small, as the chief whip in Yes Minister, and as Mr. Justice Ollie Oliphant in Rumpole of the Bailey. He played William Rowland in The Agatha Christie Hour episode "The Girl on the Train" (1982) and took the role of George Batt in Mother Love (1989), alongside Diana Rigg, David McCallum, and James Wilby. In 1999, he appeared as Mr. Spenlow in two episodes of David Copperfield. His most widely recognized television role was Chief Superintendent Strange in Inspector Morse, a part he sustained across multiple series.
Grout's radio work for BBC Radio 4 was equally substantial. He voiced Barliman Butterbur in the 1981 adaptation of The Lord of the Rings and played headmaster Harry Beeston throughout all ten series of King Street Junior, which ran from 1985 to 1998. He appeared as Professor Richard Whittingham in Andy Hamilton's Old Harry's Game from 1995 to 2003, and took roles in The Secret Life of Rosewood Avenue (1991) and Any Other Business (1995).
In his personal life, Grout married Noreen, a schooldays' sweetheart. In 1977, the couple relocated from west London to Malmesbury, Wiltshire, where Grout contributed a regular column to the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald. He died on 24 June 2012, aged 84, at the Ashgrove nursing home in Purton, Wiltshire, following a prolonged illness. His wife Noreen survived him.
