Born September 18, 1961, in Westwood, New Jersey, James Joseph Gandolfini Jr. was the son of Santa and James Joseph Gandolfini, Sr. He earned a communications degree from Rutgers University and discovered acting at 25, spending two years studying the Meisner technique. His first marriage, to Marcy Gandolfini, produced a son, Michael; his second, to Deborah Lin, a daughter, Liliana.
Among his film credits: "Her," "Zero Dark Thirty," "True Romance," "The Drop," "Fallen," "Crimson Tide," "The Last Boy Scout," "Killing Them Softly," "Where the Wild Things Are," and "The Man Who Wasn't There." Television work included "The Sopranos," "Saturday Night Live," "Inside the Actors Studio," "Gun," "Angry Men," "Cinema Verite," and "Nicky Deuce."
He won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series three times for "The Sopranos," in 2000, 2001, and 2003. He also produced two documentaries: "Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq" and "Wartorn: 1861-2010." On June 26, 2013, Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor.
