About
James Firman Daly (October 23, 1918 – July 3, 1978) was an American actor born in Wisconsin Rapids, in Wood County, central Wisconsin, to Dorothy Ethelbert (Hogan) Mullen, who later worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, and Percifer Charles Daly, a fuel merchant. Before pursuing a professional acting career, Daly served in three branches of the armed forces: six months as an infantryman in the U.S. Army, two months as a cadet in the Army Air Corps, and more than four years in the Navy as an ensign during World War II. His academic path took him through the University of Wisconsin, State University of Iowa, and Carroll College before he earned a degree from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, which later awarded him an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree.
Daly's Broadway career spanned from 1946 to 1964, beginning when he served as Gary Merrill's understudy in Born Yesterday. Over the following years he appeared in a range of productions, including Handful of Fire, Mary Rose, and Saint Joan. His starring roles included Archibald MacLeish's Pulitzer Prize–winning J.B., Tennessee Williams' Period of Adjustment, and The White House. His stage work earned him two Theatre World Awards in 1951.
Beyond Broadway, Daly built an extensive career in television and film. Between 1953 and 1954 he appeared in the third season of Foreign Intrigue, playing the lead character Michael Powers. He guest-starred across numerous series, including The Twilight Zone, Mission: Impossible, Gunsmoke, Combat!, The Fugitive, The Virginian, and Twelve O'Clock High, among others. In 1955 he portrayed Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, in a DuPont Cavalcade Theater episode. He played Mr. Flint, an apparently immortal human, in the Star Trek episode "Requiem for Methuselah" in 1969, and appeared in the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. From 1969 to 1976 he was a series regular on the CBS hospital drama Medical Center, portraying Dr. Paul Lochner, the superior of Chad Everett's character. His final screen role was as Mr. Boyce in the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations.
In 1958, Daly signed a contract with the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company to represent Camel cigarettes in television commercials, a role he held for seven years during which Reynolds flew him across the United States to be filmed smoking at various locations. In 1963 and 1964 he also served as one of the hosts on NBC Radio's weekend Monitor program.
Daly had four children: actors Tyne Daly and Tim Daly, and daughters Mary Glynn and Pegeen Michael. His grandson Sam Daly is also an actor. Tyne appeared as a child on Foreign Intrigue and later played Jennifer Lochner, Paul Lochner's adult daughter, in a 1970 episode of Medical Center. Tim appeared as a child alongside his father in a production of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People. According to Tim Daly in an interview on CBS News Sunday Morning, James Daly came out to him as gay a decade after divorcing his wife Hope. As homosexuality was still classified as a mental illness until the early 1970s, Daly and his wife had attempted without success to address his sexual orientation. Following their divorce, Daly limited contact with his children out of concern that they might be considered mentally ill by association.
Daly died of heart failure on July 3, 1978, in Nyack, New York, while preparing to star in a production of Equus in Tarrytown, New York. His ashes were scattered into the Atlantic Ocean.
