About
James Culliford (8 September 1927 – 23 March 2002) was a British actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television. Born in 1927, he worked across multiple decades in the British entertainment industry, accumulating credits in notable productions for both screen and stage.
Culliford's stage training brought him into contact with the actor Alfred Lynch, whom he met at theatre acting evening classes. The two became life partners and remained together until Culliford's death. Following a stroke Culliford suffered in 1972, he and Lynch relocated from London to Brighton, where they continued to live together. Lynch survived Culliford by one year, dying of cancer in 2003.
In 1958, Culliford appeared on Broadway in three productions: the play King Henry V, the play Hamlet, and the comedy Twelfth Night. These credits represent his documented presence on the Broadway stage during that period.
Among his screen roles, Culliford appeared in The Entertainer in 1960, The Trygon Factor in 1966, and Quatermass and the Pit in 1967. In 1973 he took a role in the Doctor Who serial Frontier in Space, adding to a television career that ran alongside his stage and film work.
