About
James Conroy-Ward, born on 12 April 1947 in Timperley, Cheshire, England, is a retired actor, singer, and music publisher whose career centered on the principal comic roles of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. His Broadway appearance came in 1976 in The Pirates of Penzance, in which he performed the role of Major-General Stanley.
Conroy-Ward's exposure to performance began in childhood, shaped in part by grandparents who had worked as entertainers. As a boy he staged puppet shows at children's parties, served as head choirboy at his local church, and attended Altrincham Grammar School, an all-boys institution where he took female roles in Gilbert and Sullivan productions and received the Drama Prize. At twelve he was already participating with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in Manchester, taking on the juvenile parts of the Midshipmite in H.M.S. Pinafore and Ko-Ko's assistant in The Mikado. He subsequently studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he won the Imperial League of Opera Prize, and broadened his stage experience through work at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, York Repertory, Granada TV, and The London Opera Centre. In 1968 he was engaged by the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, where he spent four and a half years singing in the chorus and in small principal roles.
Conroy-Ward rejoined D'Oyly Carte in 1973, initially in the chorus while understudying principal comedian John Reed. That arrangement brought him a set of small principal assignments — Major Murgatroyd in Patience, the Foreman of the Jury in Trial by Jury, the First Citizen in The Yeomen of the Guard, and both Antonio and Annibale in The Gondoliers — as well as the full principal comic role of Major-General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance. During the 1975 centenary season he played Lord Dramaleigh in the company's sole revival of Utopia, Limited, and in 1977 he added Guron in Princess Ida to his credits. As Reed's understudy throughout this period, Conroy-Ward appeared regularly in the full range of principal comic parts, including J. W. Wells in The Sorcerer, Sir Joseph Porter in H.M.S. Pinafore, Reginald Bunthorne in Patience, the Lord Chancellor in Iolanthe, King Gama in Princess Ida, Ko-Ko in The Mikado, Robin Oakapple in Ruddigore, Jack Point in Yeomen of the Guard, and the Duke of Plaza-Toro in The Gondoliers. Of those roles, he identified Jack Point and Gama as his favorites and Robin Oakapple as the one he least enjoyed playing.
When Reed departed the company following a 1979 tour of Australia and New Zealand, Conroy-Ward assumed the principal comedian position. He ceded Major-General Stanley to his understudy Alistair Donkin and Robin Oakapple to Peter Lyon but otherwise held the leading comic roles until the company closed in 1982. During a 1978 U.S. tour, the San Francisco Bay Area Reporter noted that Conroy-Ward handled Major-General Stanley in Pirates better than anyone the reviewer could recall.
His recording work with D'Oyly Carte produced four releases. In 1976 he sang the Herald in The Grand Duke and Lord Dramaleigh in Utopia, Limited. A 1977 recording of The Gondoliers featured him as Antonio, with Conroy-Ward also speaking the role of Annibale. In 1982 he appeared as a soloist on the company's final recording, known as "The Last Night." After D'Oyly Carte closed, Conroy-Ward moved into telesales before joining a music publishing company.
