About
James Anthony Carpinello, born August 13, 1975, in Albany, New York, is an American actor whose career spans Broadway, film, and television. He is the son of Anthony J. Carpinello, a former Justice of the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, and Sharon E. Kelly, a mental health official. On April 25, 2003, he married actress Amy Acker; the couple have a son, born in 2005, and a daughter, born in 2006.
Carpinello made his Broadway debut in 1999 in the musical Saturday Night Fever, taking on the role of Tony Manero. He was subsequently cast as Link Larkin in the Broadway production of Hairspray but departed the show for a film role, with Matthew Morrison stepping in to replace him. In 2007, Carpinello was cast in the leading male role of Sonny in the Broadway musical Xanadu, scheduled to open June 26, 2007, at the Helen Hayes Theatre. On June 12, 2007, during a rehearsal, he broke his leg in three places while roller skating, forcing him to leave the production two weeks before opening night. Cheyenne Jackson assumed the role of Sonny beginning June 22, 2007. In 2009, Carpinello returned to Broadway as Stacee Jaxx, the central rock star character in Rock of Ages at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Beyond performing, Carpinello is a co-producer of a Broadway musical adaptation of the 1987 vampire film The Lost Boys, scheduled to open in the spring of 2026 at the Palace Theatre. In 2024, he played Orin Scrivello D.D.S. and additional roles in an Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors.
Carpinello's film credits include The Punisher (2004), The Great Raid (2005), Let's Kill Ward's Wife (2014), and Midway (2019). During the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his wife Amy Acker created, filmed, produced, and starred in a 14-minute short film titled Outside (2020), a thriller shot on his son's iPhone.
On television, Carpinello portrayed Detective Anthony Burton in episodes of the CBS series The Good Wife and appeared in the season four premiere of the USA Network series In Plain Sight. He played former soldier Joey in "Mission Creep," the third episode of the CBS crime drama Person of Interest, and reprised the role as the series concluded in June 2016. He was a regular cast member on the short-lived Fox medical and crime drama The Mob Doctor and has held recurring roles in both The Blacklist and Gotham.
