About
James Carew, born James Usselman on February 5, 1876, in Goshen, Indiana, was an American actor who built a career spanning stage and screen on both sides of the Atlantic. He died on April 4, 1938.
Before pursuing acting, Carew worked as a clerk at a publishing firm. He made his stage debut in Chicago in 1897, appearing in Damon and Pythias, and went on to establish a Broadway presence between 1900 and 1907. His New York credits included Captain Brassbound's Conversion, Caught in the Rain, The Good Hope, Two Little Sailor Boys, and Sweet Kitty Bellairs.
In 1905, Carew relocated to England, where he launched the next phase of his stage career at the Lyric Theatre in London. He subsequently appeared in two productions alongside Ellen Terry, a prominent Shakespearean actress. The professional relationship led to a personal one, and in 1907 Carew married Terry, who was thirty years his senior. The couple separated in 1910, though no record of a divorce exists; the 1911 Census lists Carew as residing with Terry at Smallhythe.
Carew transitioned to film work no later than 1917, when he appeared in Profit and the Loss. He continued taking leading roles in films based primarily in Britain for the remainder of his life, working in that capacity until his death in 1938.
