About

Jake Gyllenhaal is an American actor born Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal on December 19, 1980, in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, and the younger brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. His father is of Swedish and English descent and a descendant of the Swedish noble Gyllenhaal family, with his great-great-grandfather Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal being the last family member born in Sweden. His mother was born in New York City into an Ashkenazi Jewish family with roots in Russia and Poland, and Gyllenhaal has identified himself as Jewish. He graduated from the Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles in 1998 and subsequently enrolled at Columbia University to study Eastern religions and philosophy, residing in John Jay Hall, before leaving after two years to focus on acting.

Gyllenhaal made his acting debut as Billy Crystal's son in the 1991 comedy City Slickers. During his childhood, his parents permitted him to appear in his father's films, including A Dangerous Woman (1993) and Homegrown (1998), as well as the 1993 children's adventure Josh and S.A.M. and a 1994 episode of Homicide: Life on the Street. His first lead film role came in October Sky (1999), Joe Johnston's adaptation of Homer Hickam's autobiography Rocket Boys, in which he portrayed a young man from West Virginia pursuing a science scholarship. The film earned $32 million and was described as his breakout performance. He followed that with Donnie Darko (2001), in which he played a troubled teenager who experiences visions of a rabbit named Frank; though not a box office success on initial release, the film became a cult favorite.

Gyllenhaal's screen career expanded significantly through the 2000s and beyond. He appeared in The Good Girl (2002), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and Moonlight Mile (2002) alongside Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon. His role as Jack Twist in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain (2005) earned him the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor as well as Academy Award and Actor Award nominations in the same category. He also appeared in Jarhead (2005) and Zodiac (2007). Commercial successes during this period included The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and, later, Love & Other Drugs (2010), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), and Source Code (2011). He received further critical recognition for lead performances in End of Watch (2012), Prisoners (2013), Nightcrawler (2014), Southpaw (2015), Nocturnal Animals (2016), Stronger (2017), and Wildlife (2018). Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) became his highest-grossing release. More recent projects include The Guilty (2021), Ambulance (2022), Road House (2024), and the series Presumed Innocent (2024).

Gyllenhaal made his theatrical debut on the London stage in 2002, starring in Kenneth Lonergan's revival of This Is Our Youth at the Garrick Theatre in the West End, where the production ran for eight weeks and earned him the Standard Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer. His Broadway career spans 2015 to 2025 and includes four productions: Sunday in the Park with George (2017), Constellations, Sea Wall/A Life (2019), and Othello. For Sea Wall/A Life, he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play in 2020. That same year, he also received a Tony Award nomination for Best Play in connection with the production.
