Jacqueline DeWit was an American actress born on September 26, 1912, in Los Angeles, California, who built a career spanning Broadway, film, television, and radio. She died in Los Angeles on January 7, 1998, at the age of 85.
DeWit's stage career brought her to Broadway between 1934 and 1939, with credits including Day in the Sun, Empress of Destiny, Romeo + Juliet, and The Taming of the Shrew, the last of which she appeared in during 1935. Her screen work encompassed more than two dozen films, among them the 1945 psychological thriller Spellbound, The Snake Pit, The Damned Don't Cry!, All That Heaven Allows, Tea and Sympathy, and Harper. In 1946 she appeared in the Abbott and Costello comedy Little Giant, playing the role of Bud Abbott's wife.
Television became a significant part of DeWit's later career. She made appearances on series including Wagon Train, The Lineup, and The Monkees. Among her most recognized television work was her role in the 1959 Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough at Last," in which she portrayed the wife of the lead character played by Burgess Meredith. On radio, she was heard as Ruth Thompson on Meet Mr. McNultey and as Valerie on Second Husband. She later reprised the Thompson role on The Ray Milland Show, the television adaptation of Meet Mr. McNultey.
