About
Jack Norworth, born John Godfrey Knauff on January 5, 1879, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American songwriter, singer, vaudeville performer, and Broadway figure whose stage career spanned from 1906 to 1938. His father, Theodore Christian Knauff, worked as an organ builder and served as choir director at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. Norworth adopted his professional name when he entered show business, spending several years at sea before arriving in New York City at age 20 to pursue a career in entertainment.
Norworth earned his place in American popular music primarily as a lyricist for Tin Pan Alley. In 1908 he wrote the lyrics to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," which was later ranked eighth on the "Songs of the Century" list compiled by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America. Notably, Norworth did not attend a major league baseball game until 1940, more than three decades after writing the song. "Shine On, Harvest Moon," credited to Norworth as co-writer alongside Nora Bayes, was a larger commercial success at the time of its release, though its authorship has been disputed by multiple parties, including the family of songwriter Dave Stamper, Broadway historian John Kenrick, who credits Edward Madden and Gus Edwards, and Albert Koch of Wisconsin, who claimed to have written the song and sold it outright for fifty dollars. A sequel to that song, "Turn Off Your Light, Mr. Moon Man," was also credited to Norworth. Among his many other credited compositions were "Back to My Old Home Town," "Come Along, My Mandy," "Dear Dolly," "Good Evening, Caroline," "Holding Hands," "Honey Boy," "Meet Me in Apple Blossom Time," "Over on the Jersey Side," "Sing an Irish Song," and "Smarty," among others. He is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
His personal and professional life intersected through three marriages. Before entering his most prominent partnership, Norworth had been married to actress Louise Dresser. In 1908 he married Nora Bayes, with whom he performed in vaudeville; the two divorced in 1913. He later appeared in early sound films alongside his third wife, Dorothy Adelphi. His final film role was that of a doctor in The Southerner, directed by Jean Renoir in 1945. He was portrayed by Dennis Morgan in the 1944 musical film Shine On, Harvest Moon, in which Ann Sheridan played Bayes, and by Ron Husmann in the 1978 biographical film Ziegfeld: The Man & His Women.
On Broadway, Norworth performed and contributed as a book writer across a range of productions, including the musical Little Miss Fix-It, On Location, the musical The Jolly Bachelors, the burlesque Roly Poly, and The Fabulous Invalid. His stage work followed his appearance in the Ziegfeld Follies in 1909. Beyond the stage, Norworth was heard on early radio, including a guest appearance on Acousticon Hour in March 1928. On April 13, 1958, he appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show to perform "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" alongside New York Yankees players Ford, Berra, Mantle, and Skowron.
Norworth died of a heart attack in Laguna Beach, California, on September 1, 1959, and was interred at Melrose Abbey Memorial Park in Anaheim, California. On July 11, 2010, a three-foot black granite monument funded by fans was installed approximately one hundred feet from his headstone.
