About
Jack Mullaney (September 18, 1929 – June 27, 1982) was an American actor born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, whose career spanned Broadway, television, and film. The 1940 United States census places him living on Minot Avenue in the Oakley neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mullaney made his Broadway debut in The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker, which ran from 1953 to 1954. His film career began in 1957 with The Young Stranger, and that same year he appeared as Ensign Lewis alongside Cary Grant in the comedy Kiss Them for Me. In 1958 he took on the role of a character known as the "Professor" in South Pacific, the film adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. He played murderer Bert Rockwood in the M Squad episode "The Vanishing Lady," which first aired on April 3, 1959, and later appeared in the 1964 political thriller Seven Days in May. Mullaney worked alongside Elvis Presley in two films during the later phase of the singer's movie career: Tickle Me in 1965 and Spinout in 1966. He also portrayed Igor, the bungling minion to Vincent Price's mad scientist, in Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine.
Television provided Mullaney with several recurring roles. From 1958 to 1961 he appeared regularly on CBS's The Ann Sothern Show as Johnny Wallace, a bellhop. He then portrayed United States Navy Lieutenant (junior grade) Rex St. John in NBC's Ensign O'Toole from 1962 to 1963. From 1966 to 1967 he played Hector Canfield on the CBS science-fiction comedy series It's About Time.
Mullaney died from a stroke in Hollywood on June 27, 1982, at the age of 52. His sister was the heir to his estate.
