About

Jack J. Clark (September 23, 1879 – April 12, 1947) was an American actor and director who worked in both theater and the early motion picture industry. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Clark built a career that spanned the stage and silent film, earning recognition on Broadway and abroad.

Clark made his Broadway debut in 1905 and later appeared in the musical Simple Simon. His stage work also included productions of The Prince of Pilsen and 45 Minutes from Broadway.

In 1907, Sidney Olcott of the New York-based Kalem Studios persuaded Clark to enter the film industry. He subsequently traveled through 24 countries with the company, becoming one of the first American film actors to shoot on foreign locations. During production in the Holy Land, Kalem Studios filmed From the Manger to the Cross, in which Clark portrayed John the Apostle. The film is recognized as the first passion play produced by the studio. Clark and his co-star Gene Gauntier married during the production in 1912; the couple divorced in 1918.

Over the course of his screen career, Clark appeared in more than 200 films. His acting credits include The Colleen Bawn (1911), From the Manger to the Cross (1912), The Shaughraun (1912), The Last of the Mafia (1915), A Fool's Paradise (1916), Audrey (1916), Pajamas (1927), Love and Learn (1928), and Broadway Howdy (1929). He also worked behind the camera, directing and producing films including The Yankee Girl (1915) and The Mad Maid of the Forest (1915).

During a three-year break from the film industry in the early 1920s, Clark served as an instructor of dramatic arts at Villanova University, where he organized a dramatic workshop and produced the play Vision. During the same period he staged a pageant titled Charity, featuring a cast of 600 performers, at the Philadelphia Metropolitan Opera House. He also wrote and produced Columbus, a dramatic musical pageant performed by a cast of more than 1,000 at the Philadelphia Academy of Music for the Knights of Columbus.

In 1929, Clark married Francis Rose Musolf, and the two remained together until his death. Clark died on April 12, 1947, in Hollywood, California.
