About

Jack Davenport is an English actor born on 1 March 1973 in Wimbledon, London. The son of actor Nigel Davenport and actress Maria Aitken, he spent the first seven years of his life in Ibiza, Spain. His family connections extend to writer and former Conservative MP Jonathan Aitken, his uncle, as well as his maternal grandmother, socialite Penelope Aitken, his maternal grandfather, politician William Aitken, and one of his maternal great-grandfathers, John Maffey, 1st Baron Rugby.

Davenport's entry into acting came through an unconventional route. Following his mother's advice, he wrote to John Cleese seeking behind-the-scenes experience on the film Fierce Creatures. Cleese forwarded the letter to the casting department, and Davenport was cast in his first onscreen role as a trainee zookeeper. After completing that production, he secured an agent who arranged an audition for the BBC drama series This Life, in which he played Miles Stewart.

His television career expanded considerably from there. He became widely recognized for his role in the BBC series Coupling and later appeared in Ultraviolet. On American television, he was cast in the ABC series FlashForward, based on a novel by Robert J. Sawyer, playing Lloyd Simcoe, a physicist whose actions allegedly cause a worldwide blackout that allows people to glimpse the future. The series was cancelled after one season. In February 2011, Davenport joined the NBC musical drama Smash, playing director Derek Wills. The show ran for two seasons, with Wills guiding a Marilyn Monroe musical called Bombshell in the first season before departing that production in the second season to develop a small off-Broadway musical alongside his protégé Karen Cartwright, played by Katharine McPhee, with both productions ultimately competing at the Tonys. Davenport has also appeared in the drama series Breathless on ITV in 2013 and The Morning Show.

His film work includes The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Boat That Rocked, and Kingsman: The Secret Service. He is perhaps most broadly recognized for playing James Norrington across the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, appearing in The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man's Chest, and At World's End. Earlier television film credits include the ITV1 drama The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant in 2006, and he was cast in the CBS period drama Swingtown in 2007, a series about social and sexual liberation in 1970s American suburbia that was cancelled after one season.

Beyond screen work, Davenport has performed voice work in several formats, narrating the audio version of John Buchan's The Thirty-Nine Steps and recording parts in an audio production of Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange. He also provided the voice-over for British MasterCard advertisements. In 2011, he appeared in the music video for Snow Patrol's single "Called Out in the Dark," alongside Tara Summers and Gary Lightbody.

In 2018, Davenport made his Broadway debut in a revival of George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan, playing the Earl of Warwick opposite Condola Rashad in the title role. Davenport is married to actress Michelle Gomez. On 28 February 2023, Gomez announced via Instagram that she, Davenport, and their son had become naturalized American citizens.
