About
J. Kenneth Campbell is an American actor born in Flushing, Queens, to Dorothea Burke and James Kenneth Campbell, a lawyer. The second of seven children, he grew up on Long Island and graduated from Cheshire Academy. He began his studies at the University of Arizona before leaving to study under Sanford Meisner. Drafted into the United States Army in 1967, he subsequently enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, served during the Vietnam War, was wounded in action, and received a Purple Heart before receiving an honorable discharge.
Campbell went on to build a career spanning film, stage, and television, accumulating more than 80 roles across those mediums. He studied acting under theatrical fight director Patrick Crean and later served as an acting instructor at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
His Broadway career ran from 1973 to 1983. He made his Broadway debut playing the Viscount de Valvert in the 1973 musical Cyrano. The following year he appeared in The Freedom of the City. He later took the role of Macduff in the 1981 Broadway revival of William Shakespeare's Macbeth at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, a production that also featured Philip Anglim, Maureen Anderman, and Kelsey Grammer. Additional Broadway credits include The Philadelphia Story, which ran at the Vivian Beaumont Theater from 1980 to 1981, and The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial in 1983. Off Broadway, he portrayed King Henry VIII opposite Charlton Heston in A Man for All Seasons in 1986 and 1987 at the Union Square Theatre as part of the Roundabout Theatre Company. In 2017, he played President Lyndon Baines Johnson in an Actors' Playhouse production of All the Way in Miami.
Campbell's television work has been equally extensive. In the 1970s he appeared on The Mod Squad, The Rookies, and Baa Baa Black Sheep, and in the 1980s he had roles on the daytime soap operas The Edge of Night, Another World, and Search for Tomorrow, as well as guest appearances on Spenser: For Hire, Matlock, and Cheers. His 1990s credits include L.A. Law, Touched by an Angel, Melrose Place, and Walker, Texas Ranger, and in the 2000s he appeared in Diagnosis: Murder, Charmed, and Frasier.
Campbell is a grandnephew of Clay Clement, an actor among the earliest members of the Screen Actors Guild, and a grandson of Eugene Campbell, author of The Long Whip. His niece through his sister Carol is author Kim Gruenenfelder, and his niece through his sister Barbara is media executive Emma Rosenblum.
