About
Jonathan Kimble Simmons was born on January 9, 1955, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, to Patricia Kimble Simmons, an administrator, and Donald William Simmons, a music teacher at Parcells Middle School. One of three children, Simmons attended Ferry Elementary School in Grosse Pointe Woods before his family relocated to Worthington, Ohio, in 1965. He attended Worthington High School from 1970 to 1972, participating in drama, football, and choir. In 1973, the family moved to Missoula, Montana, where his father became director of the School of Music at the University of Montana. Simmons earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from that institution in 1978 and joined the music-oriented fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia during his studies. He performed in various roles at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse in Bigfork, Montana, between 1977 and 1982, and later became a member of the Seattle Repertory Theatre.
Simmons made his Broadway debut in 1989 and remained active on the New York stage through 1995. His Broadway credits include A Few Good Men, A Change in the Heir, Peter Pan, Guys and Dolls, and Laughter on the 23rd Floor. He played Captain Hook in the 1991 revival of Peter Pan and Benny Southstreet in the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls. His performance in Laughter on the 23rd Floor earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical in 1995. Outside of Broadway, Simmons starred in the 1987 Off-Broadway musical Birds of Paradise and sang multiple roles in the Wagner opera satire Das Barbecü in 1994. He also played Jigger in a revival of Carousel with the Houston Grand Opera.
On screen, Simmons accumulated more than 200 credits across film and television. He gained wide recognition playing J. Jonah Jameson, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle, in all three of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films between 2002 and 2007, a role he later reprised in Marvel Cinematic Universe films and various animated productions. His television work includes the role of white supremacist prisoner Vernon Schillinger on the HBO series Oz from 1997 to 2003, the recurring character Dr. Emil Skoda across multiple incarnations of the NBC series Law and Order from 1997 to 2010, Assistant Police Chief Will Pope on the TNT series The Closer from 2005 to 2012, and Howard Silk in the Starz series Counterpart from 2017 to 2019.
