About

J. H. Gilmour (1857–1922) was a Canadian stage and film actor born in Ottawa, Ontario, who maintained an active presence on Broadway from 1888 to 1918. His career spanned both theatrical and silent film work, making him a notable figure across two distinct performance mediums during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Gilmour's Broadway career encompassed a range of productions over three decades. His stage credits included The Invisible Foe, Cymbeline, The Optimist, The Crossing, and La Belle Marseillaise, among others. This sustained engagement with Broadway productions from 1888 through 1918 reflected a long and consistent commitment to the New York stage.

Beyond Broadway, Gilmour participated in summer stock theater, appearing with the company at Denver's Elitch Theatre in both 1904 and 1906. Among the productions he performed there was The Crisis, an adaptation of the novel by Winston Churchill. That production featured Maude Fealy and a young Denver-born actor named Douglas Fairbanks.

In 1917 and 1918, Gilmour appeared in a substantial number of silent films. His screen credits from that period include Sylvia of the Secret Service, Over the Hill, The Streets of Illusion, Her Beloved Enemy, The Last of the Carnabys, The Mark of Cain, A Crooked Romance, and The Candy Girl, all from 1917, followed by Waifs, The Whirlpool, and The Naulahka in 1918. This concentrated period of film work coincided with the final years of his Broadway career.
