About
Joseph Gunnis Davis, known professionally as J. Gunnis Davis, was born on 21 December 1873 in Sunderland, England, the son of Janet Davis (1845–1905) and Alfred Davis (1828–1899). He received his education in London and made his first appearance as an actor at the age of three in 1876. He went on to build a career as an actor and director that spanned stage and film work on both sides of the Atlantic.
Davis accumulated stage experience in Britain before relocating to the United States. Among his early theatrical roles was Little Billee in the Sherlock Holmes parody Sheerluck Jones, or Why D'Gillette Him Off in 1901. In 1904, he and his wife Mary moved to New York, where he worked as stage manager for producers Charles Frohman and Henry W. Savage. His Broadway career extended from 1910 to 1915 and included appearances in the play Alice in Wonderland and the musical The Arcadians.
Davis entered the film industry in 1912 and ultimately appeared in 51 films, accumulating a substantial number of directing credits under the name James Davis. He became best known for his work in The Hazards of Helen in 1914. His later film appearances included the role of auction clerk in Captain Blood (1935), Uncle Glutz in Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Secretary in The White Angel (1936), and Doctor in Show Boat (1936).
In 1902 in London, Davis married actress Mary Isabel Michael, who performed under the professional name Miss Denton Garden. The couple had one child, James Gunnis Davis (1906–1992). Davis and his wife became naturalized American citizens in 1925. He stood five feet six and a half inches tall, with blue eyes and brown hair, and weighed 112 pounds. He was a member of the Troupers and the Veteran Thespians. Davis died on 23 March 1937 at St. Vincent Hospital in Los Angeles following a brief illness, and the Troupers arranged his funeral at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
