About

Joseph Patrick Carrol Naish was born in New York City on January 21, 1896, and went on to become one of Hollywood's most prolific character actors, appearing in more than 200 films during the Golden Age of Hollywood. He was educated at St. Cecilia's Academy in New York City and gained early stage experience in both Paris and New York before transitioning to screen work. Naish died on January 24, 1973, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California, three days after his 77th birthday, and is interred at Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles.

Though Irish by heritage, Naish built his career as a dialect specialist capable of portraying characters of widely varied nationalities, among them Italian, Eastern European, Latin American, American Indian, Middle Eastern, South Asian, East Asian, and Pacific Islander. This range earned him the nickname "Hollywood's one-man U.N." Naish himself noted the irony of his situation, observing that when Irish roles became available, casting directors rarely considered him for them.

His screen career began in earnest around 1930, when the arrival of talking pictures prompted studios to recruit stage-trained actors. Although he had appeared in an uncredited bit part in the silent film What Price Glory? in 1926, Naish regarded 1930 as the true starting point of his film work. He frequently played villains, from gangsters in Paramount productions to mad scientists, including Dr. Daka in Columbia's Batman serial, a role he took after originally being cast as The Joker before being recast as a Japanese supervillain to suit the wartime setting. In the 1940s he appeared in several horror films, including House of Frankenstein (1944), in which he played Boris Karloff's assistant.

Naish received two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor. The first came for his portrayal of Giuseppe in Sahara (1943), and the second for his performance as the Hispanic father of the title character in A Medal for Benny (1945). The latter film also brought him the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. In 1960, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 6145 Hollywood Boulevard, recognizing his contributions to television.

On radio, Naish starred as Luigi Basco on the CBS program Life with Luigi from 1948 to 1953, a role he subsequently reprised for a CBS television adaptation of the same name. From 1957 to 1958, he played the lead in the television series The New Adventures of Charlie Chan. His final film, Dracula vs. Frankenstein (1971), was made after producer Samuel M. Sherman coaxed him out of retirement; in it Naish played a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein who murders young women in an attempt to revive his ancestor's creation, with Lon Chaney Jr. appearing as his mute assistant. The film marked the final screen credit for both actors.

Naish's Broadway career spanned from 1929 to 1955, and included appearances in The Crooks' Convention and A Memory of Two Mondays. In 1955, he originated the role of Alfieri in the one-act, verse version of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, which also starred Van Heflin and Eileen Heckart. Naish was married to actress Gladys Heaney from 1929 until his death; the couple had one daughter, Elaine. He spent his retirement years in San Diego before his death from emphysema at the age of 77.
