John Charles Nugent was born on April 6, 1868, in Niles, Ohio, and attended Reeves University. He went on to become an American actor, director, and screenwriter whose career spanned stage, screen, and vaudeville. By 1900 he was active in vaudeville, and he remained a working stage professional for decades thereafter.

Nugent made his Broadway debut in 1922 with the comedy Kempy, a play he wrote himself. His Broadway career continued through 1946 and encompassed a range of productions, including By Request, Dream Child, Dumb-bell, The Bough Breaks, and Fast Service, among others. In addition to performing, he directed and wrote plays throughout this period, occasionally taking acting roles in productions he had also authored.

Between 1929 and 1943, Nugent appeared in 20 films, extending his professional reach beyond the stage into motion pictures.

In his personal life, Nugent was the father of actor, writer, and producer Elliott Nugent, with whom he collaborated on writing and acting projects, and actress Ruth Elizabeth Nugent. He was also the father-in-law of actor Alan Bunce, known for his role in Ethel and Albert.

Nugent died in New York City on April 21, 1947.
