About

John Copeland Buckstone (9 September 1859 – 24 September 1924) was an English actor, playwright, and film performer active during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Born in Sydenham, Kent, he was the son of actor John Baldwin Buckstone and the brother of Lucy Isabella Buckstone.

Buckstone began his stage career in 1877, appearing as Careless in School for Scandal at the Theatre Royal, Dundee. That production featured William Henry Chippendale as Sir Peter Teazel, Caroline Hill as Lady Teazel, his sister Lucy as Maria, and his father as Sir Benjamin Backbite. In 1880 he took on the role of Sam Delafield in Men and Women at Proctor's Theatre. Two years later, in 1882, he played Frank Selwyn in The Silver King at the Princess's Theatre in London, and he reprised that role at Wallack's Theatre in New York City in 1883, marking the beginning of a Broadway presence that extended through 1890 and included both The Silver King and Men and Women among his credited productions.

Beyond his stage work, Buckstone made a significant contribution to theatrical and cinematic history through his 1901 play Scrooge, a dramatization drawn from Charles Dickens's 1843 novel A Christmas Carol. The play was promptly adapted by R. W. Paul into the film Scrooge, or, Marley's Ghost, recognized as the earliest known film adaptation of the Dickens story. Buckstone also wrote the 1913 stage version of Scrooge, which starred Seymour Hicks as Ebenezer Scrooge, and he appeared in the 1913 silent film David Garrick in the role of Mr. Smith. In 1902 he appeared alongside H. B. Irving in The Admirable Crichton at the Duke of York's Theatre in London.

Among his final stage appearances were the role of Pierre Lazarre in The Man in Dress Clothes at the Garrick Theatre in 1922 and William Gosling in Good Gracious, Annabelle! at the Duke of York's Theatre in 1923. Buckstone died in September 1924 at the age of 65.
