About
Ivy St. Helier, born Ivy Janet Aitchison in Saint Helier, Jersey, in 1886, was a British stage actress, composer, and lyricist. She took her stage name from her birthplace and built a career that spanned theatre, film, and songwriting.
St. Helier earned significant recognition through her association with Noël Coward, originating the role of Manon la Crevette in Coward's 1929 operetta Bitter Sweet. She returned to the role when the production was adapted for film in 1933. She also appeared in Coward's revue Words and Music, further cementing her place within his theatrical circle.
As a lyricist, St. Helier contributed additional songs to two London musicals: The Street Singer and The Blue Train, the latter a production with music by Robert Stolz and book by Reginald Arkell and Dion Titheradge.
Her screen work included five films. Among the most notable were Laurence Olivier's Henry V, released in 1944, and London Belongs to Me, which appeared in 1948.
St. Helier's Broadway career brought her to New York in 1948, when she appeared in Don't Listen, Ladies.
She died on 8 November 1971 in London, England.
