About

Ivan Triesault, born Johann Constantin Treisalt on July 13, 1898, in Tallinn (then Reval, Russian Empire), was an Estonian-American character actor and dancer. The son of Baltic German parents originally from the island of Hiiumaa, he grew up in modest circumstances; his father, a furniture factory foreman, died when Triesault was five years old, and his mother worked as an au pair for a wealthy family. He made his first stage appearance at the German Theatre in Tallinn at age twelve, and emigrated to the United States at eighteen.

In America, Triesault trained in ballet under choreographer Mikhail Fokine and served as Fokine's assistant for several years. It was during this period working under the Russian-born Fokine that he adopted the given name Ivan, the Russian equivalent of his birth name Johann. He subsequently worked as a dancer and mime at Radio City Music Hall. During the 1920s he also traveled with a touring theatre company in Europe and pursued further acting studies in London before returning to New York.

His Broadway career spanned from 1926 to 1941 and included appearances in the comedies The Walrus and the Carpenter and Russian Bank, as well as The Burning Deck, Foreigners, and a production of Hamlet, among other works.

Triesault transitioned to film in 1943, making his screen debut in Warner Bros.' pro-Soviet propaganda picture Mission to Moscow, in which he portrayed Soviet marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky. Over the following decades he accumulated credits in approximately 130 film and television productions. His film appearances included Cry of the Werewolf (1944), The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944), A Song to Remember (1945), Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious (1946), 5 Fingers (1952), Jet Pilot (1957), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), The 300 Spartans (1962), It Happened in Athens (1962), Von Ryan's Express (1965), and Batman (1966). He also appeared in the television series The Wild Wild West. Film historian Pekka Linnainen has described Triesault as the most successful Estonian actor in Hollywood history.

Triesault died in Los Angeles on January 3, 1980, at the age of 81, from cardiac failure.
