About
Isobel Elsom, born Isabella Reed on 16 March 1893 in Chesterton, Cambridge, England, was an English actress whose career spanned film, theatre, and television across more than five decades. She died on 12 January 1981 of heart failure at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 87.
Elsom received her education at Howard College in Bedford, England, and made her professional stage debut in London as a chorus member in The Quaker Girl in 1911. Producer Gilbert Miller later elevated her to starring status in The Outsider, a role that established her reputation as one of London's most popular stage actresses. In 1928, she served as leading lady for the Elitch Theatre summer season in Denver, where she reprised her Outsider role for Colorado audiences. Her Broadway career extended from 1926 to 1957, encompassing 17 productions. Her first Broadway appearance came in The Ghost Train in 1926, and subsequent credits included Hide and Seek, The First Gentleman, The Climate of Eden, The Burning Glass, The Innocents, and Romeo and Juliet. Her most celebrated stage performance was as the wealthy murder victim in Ladies in Retirement, which opened on Broadway in 1939, a role she carried over into the 1941 film adaptation.
Elsom's screen career began during the silent film era, during which she frequently appeared opposite actor Owen Nares, and ultimately extended to nearly 100 film appearances. Her first husband, director Maurice Elvey, cast her in his 1919 film Quinneys, and he went on to direct her in eight additional films before the marriage ended in divorce. Among her notable film credits were The White Cliffs of Dover (1944), The Unseen (1945), Of Human Bondage (1946), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Monsieur Verdoux, The Paradine Case, and The Two Mrs. Carrolls (all 1947), The Secret Garden (1949), Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955), Lust for Life and 23 Paces to Baker Street (both 1956), and My Fair Lady and The Pleasure Seekers (both 1964). She also appeared opposite Jerry Lewis in four films produced in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Throughout her career, Elsom was frequently cast in aristocratic and upper-class roles.
Her television work included appearances on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, where she appeared at least five times, as well as Armstrong Circle Theatre, Hallmark Hall of Fame, Lux Video Theatre, Playhouse 90, My Three Sons, Hawaiian Eye, Straightaway, and Dr. Kildare. In her personal life, Elsom married actor Carl Harbord in 1947; the marriage lasted until his death in 1958. She had no children. Five portraits of Elsom are held in the Photographs Collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
