About
Isabel Lamon (December 1898 – 1958), also billed as Isabel Baring, was an American actress who worked across silent film, Broadway, vaudeville, and radio. Born in Chicago, she was the daughter of Lauren G. Lamon and Mathilde Hoffelt, whose professional name was Mathilde Baring. Her mother was a silent film actress from Louisiana.
Lamon's screen career began in 1911 and extended through 1918, encompassing more than thirty short silent films. Her titles from that period include The Scandal Mongers (1911), The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1912), Saved from the Titanic (1912), Robin Hood (1912), Just Out of College (1913), Violet Dare, Detective (1913), The Matinee Girl (1918), and The Face in the Dark (1918). Her mother appeared alongside her in eight of those productions. Among her most notable screen roles was Meg March in Little Women (1918), the second filmed adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's novel.
Her Broadway career spanned from 1906 to 1925, with additional stage appearances beyond that range documented in external sources. As a child, she appeared in Sam Houston in 1906. She returned to Broadway in Forever After, which ran from 1918 into 1919, followed by The Advertising of Kate in 1922 and Aren't We All? in 1924–1925. Outside of Broadway, Lamon performed in vaudeville productions including The Gingham Girl (1923), The Butter and Egg Man, and The Honeymoon (1926). She also appeared in radio drama during the 1930s.
Lamon married songwriter and playwright William M. Hough, with whom she had one child, Carol. Hough had left Lamon by 1932, and their divorce was not finalized until 1947 following years of legal proceedings. Isabel Lamon died in New York in 1958 at the age of 59. She is buried alongside her mother at Kensico Cemetery.
