About

Isabel Irving was an American stage actress born on February 28, 1871, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Charles Washington and Isabella Irving. She died on September 7, 1944, in Nantucket, at the age of 73. Her Broadway career spanned from 1888 to 1936, a period of nearly five decades during which she appeared in a wide range of productions.

Irving's earliest known stage work took place around 1886 at the Standard Theatre in New York, where she appeared in The Schoolmistress under the direction of Rosina Vokes, playing the role of Gwendoline. Her London debut followed in 1890 at the Lyceum Theatre, where she played Daisy in Nancy and Company. By 1894, her professional standing had advanced sufficiently that she negotiated a three-year contract with the management of the Lyceum Theatre in New York, a contract that, for the first time in her career, guaranteed her leading roles. Prior to that agreement, her work had been confined to ingenue parts and other smaller supporting roles.

In 1899, Irving married the actor William H. Thompson following a secret engagement. Thompson died in 1923. During a national tour in 1907, Irving performed in Susan in Search of a Husband, and her appearance in Oregon was noted by The Morning Oregonian, which described her as a comedienne during that engagement.

Among her Broadway credits, Irving appeared in The Temperamental Journey, Three Wise Fools, Uncle Vanya, and The Age of Innocence. Her broader stage career included roles in As You Like It, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Hunchback, She Stoops to Conquer, and Merry Wives of Windsor, among numerous other productions. Irving retired from the stage in 1936 upon completing a final tour of Three Wise Fools.
