About
Ingrid Craigie, born in 1953 or 1954, is an Irish actress whose work spans theatre, television, and film. A native of County Cork, she was raised in Finglas, Dublin, where her family operated Merville Dairy. Her father, George, served in the Irish Army, and Craigie attended Alexandra College before enrolling at Trinity College Dublin, where she studied English under lecturers including Brendan Kennelly and David Norris. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1976. She currently resides in Portobello, Dublin.
Craigie's involvement with Trinity Players during her university years led directly to a professional stage career. Following graduation, she joined the Abbey Theatre after being offered her first contract by Joe Dowling, remaining with the company for five years. Her time at the Abbey included several world premieres of plays by Brian Friel, and over the course of her career she has collaborated with major Irish playwrights including Tom Murphy and Martin McDonagh. In 2006, she played Grace in the Gate Theatre production of Friel's Faith Healer alongside Ralph Fiennes, the same year she was appointed to the Gate Theatre's board. Her stage work also encompasses productions of The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Richard III, Measure for Measure, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Mrs. Warren's Profession, and Sweet Bird of Youth. In 2022, she toured Ireland and the United Kingdom in the role of The Proprietor in Frank McGuinness's Dinner with Groucho.
Craigie's Broadway career spans 1993 to 2014 and includes Wonderful Tennessee, The Cripple of Inishmaan with Daniel Radcliffe, Ariel by Marina Carr, and The Plough and the Stars alongside Brendan Gleeson.
Her film credits include The Dead in 1987, Da in 1988, Circle of Friends in 1995, Entebbe in 2018, and You Are Not My Mother in 2021. In 2010, Craigie co-directed the Irish premiere of Grigory Frid's opera The Diary of Anne Frank with Opera Theatre Company, working alongside Annilese Miskimmon. In 2007, she received the Irish Times Irish Theatre Lifetime Achievement Award.
