About

Ida St. Leon (January 16, 1894 – July 8, 1961) was an Australian actress and circus performer whose Broadway career spanned from 1907 to 1921. Born Ida Jeannie Jones in Sydney, Australia, she was the daughter of Alfred St. Leon and Vernon Ida St. Leon, members of the "Famous St. Leon Family of European Acrobats." Some publicity materials of the era claimed she had been born in China. Growing up in a performing family, St. Leon and her siblings were working as circus performers from an early age.

St. Leon's Broadway debut came in 1907 when the family appeared in Margaret Mayo's Polly of the Circus. She subsequently took over the lead role from Mabel Taliaferro in 1909 and continued touring with the production for several years. Her stage work during the 1910s included Finishing Fanny (1912), Our Children (1913), Help Wanted (1914), Little Women (1914), and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1916). She also appeared in Upstairs and Down (1916) and Rachel Barton Butler's Mamma's Affair (1917). Her final verified Broadway credit was The Wheel in 1921, and she also appeared in Lightnin in 1923.

In 1913, photographers identified her photograph as a bestseller. Her 1916 performance in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm drew a critical notice from a Los Angeles reviewer who described her delivery as a nasal twang characterized as "cute."

St. Leon's engagement to businessman Leo Maurice Rosenberg was announced in 1916. The couple had a son named Leo in 1917. The pair were reported as estranged between 1918 and 1920 before reuniting. St. Leon was also named as a co-respondent in the divorce proceedings of Eugenia and George McIntyre, with allegations that she had been overly familiar with McIntyre and had accepted substantial cash gifts from him.
