About
Hy Anzell (September 7, 1923 – August 23, 2003) was an American actor born in New York, New York. A Yiddish-speaking performer of Jewish heritage, Anzell built a career that spanned stage, film, and television across several decades.
His Broadway career extended from 1943 to 1979 and included productions such as Oklahoma!, Yentl, Manny, Checking Out, and Seidman and Son. He was part of the original 1976 Broadway cast of Checking Out. Beyond Broadway, Anzell created the role of flower shop owner Mr. Mushnik in the original off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, appearing alongside Ellen Greene and Lee Wilkof.
Anzell accumulated credits in dozens of films and television programs throughout his career. He appeared in multiple films directed by Woody Allen, with his first being Bananas. His most recognized screen performance came in Allen's Annie Hall, in which he played Uncle Joey Nichols.
Anzell died of natural causes on August 23, 2003, at the age of 79.
