About
Hunter Parrish Tharp, born on May 13, 1987, in Richmond, Virginia, is an American actor and singer whose career has spanned television, film, and Broadway. He is the son of Annie Parrish, who works with children with autism, and Bruce Tharp, an engineer, and has an older brother. Parrish completed his secondary education at Plano Senior High School and attended Texas Tech University Independent School District before pursuing a professional career in entertainment.
His path into the industry began after he was spotted at a New York showcase directed by Peter Seidman, which led to professional representation. He subsequently guest starred in various television programs and appeared in the 2004 film Sleepover. His profile rose considerably in 2005 when he joined the main cast of the Showtime series Weeds, portraying Silas Botwin, the older son of the Botwin family. The series ran for eight seasons, concluding in 2012.
Parrish made his Broadway debut on August 11, 2008, stepping into the lead role of Melchior Gabor in the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, replacing the original performer in the part. He remained with the production until it closed on January 18, 2009. Roughly two and a half years later, he returned to Broadway to headline the 2011 revival of Godspell, playing Jesus. Performances began on October 13, 2011, at the Circle in the Square Theatre, and Parrish stayed with the show until April 15, 2012, when he departed to film the final season of Weeds. He later appeared on Broadway in To Kill a Mockingbird, bringing his total Broadway credits to three productions between 2006 and 2018.
During the years he was active on Weeds, Parrish also accumulated a number of film credits. He appeared in supporting roles in RV (2006), Freedom Writers (2007), 17 Again (2009), and It's Complicated (2009). In Freedom Writers, he played Ben Samuels, described as the only white student in a California high school class. He also participated in the 2008 short Cougar 101 with Hunter Parrish for funnyordie.com and co-hosted the web series Two Guys and a Girl alongside Kyle Sherman and Allison Tyler from 2007 to 2009.
Following the conclusion of Weeds, Parrish pursued a range of recurring television roles. In 2013 and 2014, he appeared on The Good Wife as Jeffrey Grant, a young man accused of murder. In 2015, he took on recurring parts in both The Following and Hand of God. He held a main role in the Amazon series Good Girls Revolt, released in 2016, and in 2017 was cast as Clay Haas in the second season of the ABC thriller Quantico. He subsequently appeared in the Netflix drama Ratched, produced by Ryan Murphy, which was filmed between January and July 2019 and released on September 18, 2020. In 2022, Parrish was cast in the Hulu mystery thriller series The Other Black Girl, an adaptation of Zakiya Dalila Harris's 2021 novel, which premiered on September 13, 2023.
In 2012, Parrish released his debut EP, Guessing Games, a six-track recording initially sold exclusively in the lobby of the Circle in the Square Theatre during the run of Godspell. The lead single, Sitting at Home, became available on iTunes on June 7, 2012, with the full EP following on June 26 of that year.
Parrish has been married to Kathryn Wahl since 2015. The couple have two children, a daughter born in September 2020 and a son born in November 2025. He has identified publicly as a Christian.
