About
Hunter Foster is an American actor, singer, playwright, librettist, and director born on June 25, 1969, in Lumberton, North Carolina. He is the older brother of actress Sutton Foster and is married to actress Jennifer Cody. Foster and Cody have lived in Teaneck, New Jersey.
Foster's Broadway career spans from 1987 to 2014. His breakthrough came in 2001 when he was cast as Bobby Strong in Urinetown, a role that earned him a Lucille Lortel Award and a nomination for an Outer Critics Circle Award. Two years later, he took on the role of Seymour in the Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors, which brought him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, both in 2004. Among his other Broadway credits, Foster played Leo Bloom in The Producers and originated the role of Bud in The Bridges of Madison County in 2014. He also appeared in Hands on a Hardbody on Broadway.
Beyond Broadway, Foster portrayed Sam Phillips in Million Dollar Quartet at the Nederlander Theatre, which opened on April 11, 2010. He played Ensign Pulver in Mister Roberts at the Kennedy Center and took on the role of Molina in Kiss of the Spider Woman at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia. Off-Broadway, he appeared as Ben in Modern Orthodox. In 2011, he portrayed Richard Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine at the La Jolla Playhouse, with the production running through March 27 of that year. He also appeared on the ABC Family series Bunheads as Scotty Sims, the brother of his real-life sister Sutton Foster's character.
Foster's work as a writer includes the libretto for a 2002 off-Broadway musical adaptation of the film Summer of '42. He also co-wrote an adaptation of the film Bonnie and Clyde with Urinetown co-star Rick Crom, titled Bonnie & Clyde: A Folktale, which was developed through a residency at the Academy for New Musical Theatre with support from the ASCAP Foundation Irving Caesar Fund Fellowship and a Producer-Writer Initiative from the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. Foster was additionally among the writers for Rosie O'Donnell's 2008 NBC series Rosie Live, which was cancelled following its first episode.
As a director, Foster has worked at the Bucks County Playhouse and at regional theaters. His directing credits at Bucks County Playhouse include Company in 2015 and Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story in June 2016.
