About

Hugh O'Connell (August 4, 1898 – January 19, 1943) was an American stage and film actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1921 to 1938. He was born in New York City and, after being orphaned at a young age, relocated to live with a farmer near Green Bay, Wisconsin. He pursued business studies at the Appleton Business College in Wisconsin and subsequently worked at a depot of the Northwestern Railroad before taking a position as a theater usher in Chicago. It was there that he encountered the Cal Stewart Stock Company, which was performing at that venue, and he departed with the troupe when it went on the road.

His time with the Stewart company opened doors to engagements with stock companies in Juneau, Alaska, the province of Saskatchewan in Canada, and other locations. O'Connell eventually left a touring company in Seattle in search of greater opportunities on the West Coast, but after finding none in Seattle or San Francisco, he traveled east with another company, performing in numerous one-night stands before connecting with road companies operating out of New York.

O'Connell made his Broadway debut in Face Value in 1921 and went on to accumulate an extensive list of credits over the following two decades. His appearances included Zeno (1923), Cousin Sonia (1925), The Wisdom Tooth (1926), Sure Fire (1926), Ballyhoo (1927), Fog (1927), The Racket (1927), Gentlemen of the Press (1928), Week-End (1929), and Once in a Lifetime (1930). He continued working steadily through the 1930s in productions such as Face the Music (1932), A Saturday Night (1933), The Milky Way (1934), the Ziegfeld Follies of 1936, and Run Sheep Run (1938). An Associated Press review of The Milky Way described it as containing the best performance of O'Connell, calling him undoubtedly the funniest actor on the stage.

O'Connell was married and had a son. He died on January 19, 1943, in Hollywood, California.
