About

Hugh Michael Jackman was born on 12 October 1968 in Sydney, New South Wales, to English parents Grace McNeil and Christopher John Jackman, an accountant educated at Cambridge. His parents had emigrated to Australia in 1967 under the "Ten Pound Poms" immigration scheme, and Jackman holds both Australian and British citizenship. One of his paternal great-grandfathers, Nicholas Isidor Bellas, was Greek, from the Ottoman Empire. Jackman's parents divorced when he was eight, after which he remained in Australia with his father and two brothers while his mother returned to England with his two sisters. He also has a younger half-sister from his mother's remarriage. He attended Pymble Public School before enrolling at Knox Grammar School on Sydney's Upper North Shore, where he appeared in a production of My Fair Lady in 1985 and served as school captain in 1986. A gap year in 1987 took him to Uppingham School in England, where he worked as a physical education teacher.

Jackman studied at the University of Technology Sydney, graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. A drama course taken in his final year, in which he played the lead in Václav Havel's The Memorandum, redirected his ambitions toward acting. He subsequently completed a one-year program called "The Journey" at the Actors' Centre in Sydney, then declined an offer to appear on the soap opera Neighbours in order to attend the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University in Perth, from which he graduated in 1994.

His first major professional role came immediately after his graduation performance, when he was cast in the ABC television drama series Correlli, a ten-part production where he met his future wife, Deborra-Lee Furness. His early screen work also included the films Erskineville Kings and Paperback Hero, both from 1999, as well as television appearances on Law of the Land, Halifax f.p., Blue Heelers, and Banjo Paterson's The Man from Snowy River. On the Melbourne stage, Jackman played Gaston in the local Walt Disney production of Beauty and the Beast in 1995 and Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard in 1996, and he appeared in the 1998 Midsumma Festival cabaret production Summa Cabaret.

Jackman gained international recognition in 1998 when he was cast as Curly McLain in the Royal National Theatre's West End revival of Oklahoma!, a performance that earned him a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. He also appeared in the 1999 film version of the production. His breakthrough in film came the following year with Bryan Singer's X-Men (2000), in which he originated the role of Wolverine alongside Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Famke Janssen. The film earned $296 million at the box office, and Jackman went on to reprise the character across the X-Men franchise and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

Jackman's film career has spanned multiple genres. His credits include the romantic comedy Kate & Leopold (2001), the action-horror Van Helsing (2004), the drama The Prestige (2006), the period romance Australia (2008), the science fiction film Real Steel (2011), the thriller Prisoners (2013), the political drama The Front Runner (2018), and the crime drama Bad Education (2019). He voiced characters in the animated films Flushed Away and Happy Feet, both released in 2006, as well as Rise of the Guardians (2012) and Missing Link (2019). His performance as Jean Valjean in the musical film Les Misérables (2012) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. For The Greatest Showman (2017), in which he also starred, Jackman received a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack.

His Broadway career spans from 2003 to 2022. He made his American stage debut in 2002 in a concert production of Carousel, playing Billy Bigelow at Carnegie Hall. On Broadway, his first credit was The Boy from Oz, in which he played Peter Allen. That performance earned him the 2004 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, and a Theatre World Award. He subsequently appeared in A Steady Rain and headlined Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway. He also appeared in the musical Over the River and The Music Master. From 2021 to 2023, he starred as Harold Hill in the Broadway revival of The Music Man, a role that brought him an additional Tony Award nomination. In total, Jackman has received two Tony Awards.

Beyond performing, Jackman has hosted the Tony Awards on four occasions, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for his hosting of the 2005 ceremony. He also hosted the 81st Academy Awards in 2009. In 2019, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia.
