Hugh Michael Horace Dancy was born on 19 June 1975 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, and raised in Newcastle-under-Lyme, England. His father, Jonathan Dancy, born in 1946, is a philosophy professor who has taught at the University of Reading and the University of Texas at Austin. His mother, Sarah Ann Dancy, née Birley, born in 1952, works in academic publishing. Dancy is the eldest of three siblings; his brother Jack Dancy, born in 1977, is co-director of the travel company Trufflepig Travel, and his sister Katharine Sarah Redman, née Dancy, born in 1980, works for UNESCO.
Dancy's early education began at Edenhurst Preparatory School in Newcastle-under-Lyme, which he attended from ages five to ten. At eighteen, he performed in the Winchester College Players production of Twelfth Night, staged in both Winchester and at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall. He subsequently studied English at St Peter's College, Oxford. After graduating, Dancy relocated to London, where a chance conversation in a café led to his introduction to casting director Ros Hubbard and agent Dallas Smith, who signed him.
His early screen work included a role in the second series of Cold Feet in 1999, in which he played Danny, a character who has a brief romance with one of the show's central figures. In 2000, he gained wider recognition playing the title character in a television film adaptation of David Copperfield. He followed that with the BBC's 2002 adaptation of George Eliot's Daniel Deronda, in which he portrayed the title role. His television work also included the role of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, in Channel 4's miniseries Elizabeth I in 2005, a performance that earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
Dancy's film credits span a range of genres and productions. He appeared as Kurt Schmid in Black Hawk Down in 2001 and as Prince Charmont opposite Anne Hathaway in Ella Enchanted in 2004. He also starred as Adam Raki in the independent film Adam, which follows a young man with autism and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009.
On Broadway, Dancy appeared in productions between 2007 and 2011. In 2007, he took on the starring role of Captain Dennis Stanhope in Journey's End at the Belasco Theatre. In August 2018, he was announced as part of the cast of Roundabout Theatre Company's off-Broadway premiere of Apologia, written by Alexi Kaye Campbell, in which he played the dual roles of Peter and Simon alongside Stockard Channing.
In March 2012, NBC announced that Dancy had been cast as criminal profiler Will Graham in Hannibal, the television series based on Thomas Harris's 1981 novel Red Dragon. The show ran for three seasons before concluding in 2015. From 2016 to 2018, he appeared as Cal Roberts, a lead character in Hulu's The Path, alongside Aaron Paul and Michelle Monaghan.
