About
Cuénod built his reputation across opera, operetta, legit theatre, musical theatre, and the concert stage. He launched his career as a concert recitalist, and in the 1930s studied under Nadia Boulanger in Paris, joining her groundbreaking recordings of the Monteverdi madrigals. He also produced distinguished recordings of lute songs, Couperin, and the Evangelist in Bach's "St Matthew Passion."
His opera career began in 1928 when he sang in Ernst Krenek's Weimar-era work "Jonny Spielt Auf" at the Théatre des Champs Elysées in Paris, just a year after its Leipzig premiere. Noël Coward then pulled him from obscurity the following year, casting him in the first production of Bitter Sweet, which opened at His Majesty's Theatre in London before transferring to Broadway.
A gala marking his 100th birthday in 2002 served as Cuénod's final public appearance, where the Lotte Lehmann Foundation presented him with the World of Song Award.
