About

Howard Allan Mawson (23 May 1920 – 28 March 2004) was a Canadian bass-baritone born in Toronto, Ontario, whose career centered on the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan. He trained at the Hambourg Conservatory of Music and later at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and was also a graduate of the Ontario College of Art.

Mawson's connection to Gilbert and Sullivan began early: his first role was Dick Deadeye in a 1937 production of H.M.S. Pinafore staged by Vaughan Road Collegiate. Together with his father Frederick Mawson, a Toronto choirmaster, he co-founded the Toronto Light Opera Association, where he performed principal roles. He was additionally a member of the Eaton Operatic Society and a founding member of the Toronto Gilbert and Sullivan Society, with which he appeared from 1967 until 1992. His roles for that society included Koko in its inaugural production, The Mikado, and the Major General in its final production, The Pirates of Penzance. Several of his Gilbert and Sullivan performances were broadcast live on CBC Television.

Beyond operetta, Mawson performed in light operas at the Stratford Festival between 1960 and 1965, and took minor roles in the Canadian Opera Company's 1966 productions of La traviata and Healey Willan's opera Deirdre.

His Broadway credit came in 1960, when he appeared in H.M.S. Pinafore at the Phoenix Theatre in New York City, a production directed by Tyrone Guthrie. Mawson played Dick Deadeye in that production. His wife, Elizabeth Mawson (1927–2008), a Canadian mezzo-soprano who had been a fellow student at the Hambourg Conservatory, appeared alongside him as Hebe. The couple performed together on many occasions over the years and also sang as soloists in the choir of St. Andrew's United Church in Toronto.

In his later years Mawson suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He died in Toronto on 28 March 2004 at the age of 83, survived by his wife Elizabeth and their two sons, Allan and Douglas.
