About

Howard Warren Marsh, born on August 16, 1888, in Bluffton, Indiana, was a leading Broadway tenor whose career spanned from 1917 to 1935. He studied at Purdue University, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Marsh originated three significant roles across a seven-year stretch of Broadway productions. In 1921, he created the role of Baron Franz Schober in Blossom Time, Sigmund Romberg's operetta built around the life and music of Franz Schubert. Three years later, he originated the role of Prince Karl Franz in Romberg's The Student Prince, which opened in 1924. His third major creation came in 1927, when he played Gaylord Ravenal in the original Broadway production of Show Boat, the landmark musical by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. He did not reprise the Ravenal role in any subsequent revival of that production.

In 1930, Marsh appeared in The Well of Romance alongside his Show Boat co-star Norma Terris, which marked his final appearance in a new Broadway production. Following that, he took on major roles in Broadway revivals of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, including Iolanthe, The Gondoliers, Trial by Jury, The Pirates of Penzance, and Patience. He made no recordings of material from The Student Prince or Show Boat, though he did record selections from the Gilbert and Sullivan productions. None of those recordings has been released on CD. Marsh never appeared in films or on television.

He died on August 7, 1969, at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, nine days before what would have been his eighty-first birthday.
