Houseley Stevens, born Houseley Stevenson in London on July 30, 1879, was a British-American character actor whose career spanned stage, film, and early television. He died in Duarte, California on August 6, 1953.
Stevens performed in live stage productions in New York under the name Houseley Stevens, appearing on Broadway between 1938 and 1940. His Broadway credits included The Time of Your Life, Journey's End, Stop Press, On the Rocks, and Schoolhouse on the Lot. His film career began in 1936, and he also worked in early television productions.
In California, Stevenson served as a resident teacher at the Pasadena Playhouse. His television appearances included two episodes of Kraft Television Theatre in 1948, titled Barchester Towers and Spring Green, as well as a role in the Adventures of Superman episode Rescue in 1952, in which he played Pop Polgase. He appeared in the Family Theater episode That I May See in 1951 and played Uncle Willy in the Gruen Playhouse episode Joe Santa Claus that same year. He also appeared in Front Page Detective between 1951 and 1952 and in the series Rebound between 1952 and 1953, where he played a character named Charles in the episode The Old Man.
Stevenson was the father of three actors: Houseley Stevenson Jr., Edward Stevenson, and Onslow Stevens.
