About

Horace McMahon (May 17, 1907 – August 17, 1971) was an American actor born in South Norwalk, Connecticut, whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television across four decades. His interest in acting developed during his studies at Fordham University School of Law, and he went on to build a reputation as one of Hollywood's most reliable character performers, frequently cast as gangsters and criminals in his early years.

McMahon's stage career began on Broadway in 1931 and continued through 1969, encompassing productions that included Man Bites Dog, Wild Waves, Far-Away Horses, Damn Yankees, and Hello, Dolly! His most celebrated stage role came in 1949, when he played Lieutenant Monaghan in the drama Detective Story, a performance that marked a significant shift from the criminal types he had previously been known for. He reprised that character two years later in Paramount Pictures' 1951 film adaptation of Detective Story, which starred Kirk Douglas and Eleanor Parker.

Beyond that landmark role, McMahon remained active in film and television throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He starred as Lieutenant Mike Parker in the ABC police series Naked City, which ran from 1958 to 1963, portraying the character as a gruff but principled officer committed to doing the job by the rules. That performance earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 1962. In 1964, he appeared in the CBS drama series Mr. Broadway as Hank McClure, a police contact. On October 5, 1967, he played the character Glu Gluten in the Batman episode "The Sport of Penguins" on ABC, and in 1968 he portrayed police Captain Tom Farrell in The Detective, starring Frank Sinatra. McMahon also lent his voice to commercial work, including advertisements for Close-Up toothpaste and Armstrong tires.

In his personal life, McMahon was married to actress Louise Campbell from 1938 until his death in 1971. Their daughter, Martha McMahon, also pursued an acting career. In 1972, a 375-seat theater named in his honor was established in the McCrory Building on Washington Street in South Norwalk, Connecticut.
