About
Lemuel Hooper Atchley was born on April 30, 1887, in Ebenezer, Tennessee, the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Atchley. He completed his formal education through the Knoxville, Tennessee, school system in 1908.
Atchley began his professional acting career with a stock theater company in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He subsequently established a presence on Broadway, where he performed from 1913 to 1928. His Broadway appearances included the revue Marie Dressler's "All Star Gambol" in 1913, the play Across the Street in 1924, and the play Jarnegan in 1928.
Following his Broadway work, Atchley transitioned to film, appearing in 214 productions between 1929 and 1944. Among his screen roles, he is noted for portraying the inconsiderate father in the Our Gang short film Birthday Blues, released in 1932.
Atchley died on November 17, 1943, in Hollywood, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 56 years old.
