About

Hobart Cavanaugh (September 22, 1886 – April 26, 1950) was an American character actor whose career spanned stage, vaudeville, and film. Born in Virginia City, Nevada, he studied at the University of California before entering show business through the vaudeville circuit, where he worked alongside performer Walter Catlett.

Cavanaugh's Broadway career extended from 1916 to 1948 and encompassed both musicals and plays. His stage credits included the original 1919 production of the musical Irene, as well as the musical Tell Her the Truth and the plays Kibitzer, The Man on Stilts, and Made in France. His final Broadway engagement came with the long-running 1948 musical As the Girls Go.

His screen career began with San Francisco Nights in 1928. Though many of his early film appearances were uncredited supporting parts, he took on more substantial roles in I Cover the Waterfront and Mary Stevens, M.D., both released in 1933. By the mid-1930s he was appearing in higher-profile productions, including A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), Captain Blood (1935), and Wife vs. Secretary (1936). He continued working steadily in film through the following decade, with a notable appearance in A Letter to Three Wives (1949). His screen roles frequently featured downtrodden or henpecked men, and by the end of his life he had accumulated more than 180 film appearances.

Cavanaugh was diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer while working on Stella (1950). Despite collapsing twice on set and being unable to eat, he remained committed to completing the film. He died following an operation at the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, on April 26, 1950.
