About
Herbie Faye (February 2, 1899 – June 28, 1980) was an American actor and vaudeville comedian whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades.
Faye's early career was rooted in vaudeville, where he worked alongside Mildred Harris. His professional association with Phil Silvers began in 1928, when Silvers served as the straight man in Faye's act. That working relationship would prove enduring, eventually extending to television.
On Broadway, Faye was active from 1942 to 1951. His stage credits include the revue Wine, Women and Song, which opened in 1942, and Top Banana in 1951, the latter again connecting him to Silvers.
Faye's film work included three notable roles. In 1956, he appeared as Max in The Harder They Fall, a boxing drama starring Humphrey Bogart in what became Bogart's final film. In 1961, he played a cook in the comedy Snow White and the Three Stooges. The following year, he portrayed Charlie the bartender in Requiem for a Heavyweight, a boxing film starring Anthony Quinn.
His television career brought him back into Silvers' orbit on two occasions. Faye appeared as a supporting cast member on The Phil Silvers Show, which ran on CBS from 1955 to 1959, and later on The New Phil Silvers Show, which aired from 1963 to 1964.
Faye died on June 28, 1980, from heart failure.
