About
Herbert Thomas Mundin (21 August 1898 – 5 March 1939) was an English character actor who built a career across the London stage, Broadway, and Hollywood films of the 1930s. Born in St Helens, Lancashire, he was the son of William and Jane Mundin, and the family relocated to St Albans, Hertfordshire shortly after his birth, where the 1901 census records them at St Helens Villa, Paxton Road. Mundin received his education at St Albans School and served with the Royal Navy during World War I.
Mundin began his acting career on the London stage in the 1920s before making his first journey to the United States on 18 December 1923, sailing from Southampton aboard the RMS Aquitania for a series of theatrical engagements in New York. Ship's passenger records describe him as standing 5'7" tall, with a fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, and a scar above his left eye. His Broadway career spanned 1924 to 1925, during which he appeared in Andre Charlot's Revue of 1924 and starred in Charlot's Revue, the latter featuring Gertrude Lawrence and Beatrice Lillie.
Following his Broadway work, Mundin spent time in Australia and London before permanently relocating to the United States in 1931. He signed a contract with the Fox Film Corporation and went on to appear in more than fifty films as a character actor. His jowled features and cheerful disposition led to frequent casting as older, eccentric figures in 1930s Hollywood productions. Among his most recognized screen roles was Much, the miller's son, in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) alongside Errol Flynn. He also appeared in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) with Charles Laughton and Clark Gable, and portrayed Barkis in MGM's David Copperfield (1935).
Mundin died on 5 March 1939 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a passenger in a vehicle struck at an intersection and died of a fractured skull.
