About
Herbert Kelcey, born Herbert Henry Lamb on 10 October 1856 in London, England, was an English-born American stage and film actor whose career spanned from the 1870s through the mid-1910s. He made his stage debut in Brighton in 1877, followed by his first London appearance in 1880. Kelcey subsequently relocated to the United States, making his American debut at Wallack's Theatre in New York in 1882 and beginning a Broadway career that would extend from 1883 to 1916.
Kelcey became a prominent figure in society dramas on the American stage. Among his notable Broadway credits were The Silver King, which he appeared in during 1883, as well as starring roles in Meet the Wife and productions including Years of Discretion, Children of Earth, and Pollyanna. His other stage work included The Harvest in 1893, A Coat of Many Colors in 1897, The Moth and the Flame in 1898, Manon Lescaut and My Lady Dainty in 1901, Her Lord and Master in 1902, Taps in 1904, The Daughters of Men in 1907, and The Learned Ladies in 1911. In 1902, Kelcey became the second actor in America to portray Sherlock Holmes, following William Gillette's origination of the role.
During the 1890s, Kelcey formed a theatrical partnership with actress Effie Shannon, a collaboration modeled on celebrated English husband-and-wife acting teams such as the Bancrofts and the Kendals. Some film and theater sources have suggested the two were married, though no evidence supports that claim. Kelcey had previously been married to actress Caroline Hill from the 1870s through the early 1890s, and Shannon had herself been married to Henry Guy Carleton from 1890 to 1892. Despite the absence of a confirmed marriage between Kelcey and Shannon, when Shannon died in 1954 she was buried beside him at Saint Ann's Cemetery in Sayville, New York.
In addition to his stage work, Kelcey appeared in two films: After the Ball in 1914 and The Sphinx in 1916. He died on 10 July 1917.
