About
Joseph Henry Kolker was born on November 13, 1874, in Berlin, Germany, though some sources cite 1870 as his birth year. He came to the United States at the age of five and received his education from Franciscan Monks in Quincy, Illinois. He went on to build a career as an American stage and film actor and director.
Kolker began his professional acting career in stock theater in 1895, accumulating substantial stage experience before transitioning to film. His Broadway appearances spanned from 1904 to 1917 and included productions such as Our Wives, Over the 'Phone, Her Husband's Wife, and The Silent Witness. During his stage years he performed alongside actresses including Edith Wynne Matthison, Bertha Kalich, and Ruth Chatterton. Kolker bore a physical resemblance to actor John Drew, a likeness that became more pronounced as he aged and adopted a moustache, leading some to believe he was Drew's son and a member of the Barrymore family.
He entered silent films in 1915, the same year he received a writing credit for the short film The Man with the Iron Heart. Kolker also worked as a director, helming 18 feature films, the majority of which are now lost. His most noted directorial effort was the 1921 film Disraeli, starring George Arliss, of which only a single reel survives today. He also received a writing credit for The Third Generation in 1920.
As a film actor, Kolker is remembered for his role as an elderly CEO in the Pre-Code film Baby Face in 1933, as well as his portrayal of Mr. Seton, the father of characters played by Katharine Hepburn and Lew Ayres, in the 1938 George Cukor-directed film Holiday.
In his personal life, Kolker was married to Lillian Carroll; the two divorced in 1926, after which he married Margaret Bruen. He died on July 15, 1947, at the age of 72.
